UWC MAASTRICHT
Day 1
Peter, the head of
college and Satyadeep, the senior houseparent were waiting for us at Schipol
airport along with some of the second years who warmly welcomed us. We then
took a bus for Maastricht and that’s where the first conversations started and
the first bonds were created.
We arrived at the
boarding house and we met all of our co-years who were already there. Everyone
was looking for their roommates and running to see which room they got.
Overall, the first day was intense and exciting.
Day 2
After a long night
of unpacking and socializing, we had an introduction to the residence life and
the UWC Movement by all the houseparents.
We met them in the common room where students usually have dinner and
movie nights. The houseparents are going to be an adult figure for all of us.
They’re the ones we should go to if we have a problem or simply need some
advice to help us get through this experience.
Day 3
Friday is the
market day in Maastricht. We got to visit all the amazing food and fruit stands
since our residence is so close to the market square. After the tour, we all
went to the Town Hall to meet the Mayor. He introduced us to his city and to
all the activities organized in Maastricht. During the night, we went to school
for the first time for the talent show. Everyone showcased his musical and
dancing skills. People in UWC Maastricht are definitely talented!
Day 4
Since the Netherlands
is famous for its bikes, Saturday was dedicated to cycling. The school gave us
our bikes and there was a cycle riding and maintenance workshop. We then split
into two groups. One group went on a bike trip to Belgium and another one which
I was a part of learned how to cycle !
Day 5
Every first Sunday
of the month, the city of Maastricht organizes some cultural events: concerts, fairs, fashion shows… That day we organized a
scavenger hunt all around town. We divided into the groups and we all had to
successfully complete a list of missions. We had to create a monster with ten
feet and ten hands; take pictures with Maastricht University students; write
UWC in an original way; ask people about the name of the Mayor, take a picture
with traditional dutchfood and finally perform in the Market square.
